The Sons of Aaron

3 These are the generations of Aaron and Moses at the time when the Lord spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai. ² These are the names of the sons of Aaron: ^(A)Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. ³ These are the names of the sons of Aaron, ^(B)the anointed priests, ^(C)whom he ordained to serve as priests. ^4 (D)But Nadab and Abihu died before the Lord when they offered unauthorized fire before the Lord in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no children. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests in the lifetime of Aaron their father.

Duties of the Levites

⁵ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ^6 (E)“Bring the tribe of Levi near, and set them before Aaron the priest, that they may minister to him. ⁷ They shall keep guard over him and over the whole congregation before the tent of meeting, ^(F)as they minister at the tabernacle. ⁸ They shall guard all the furnishings of the tent of meeting, and keep guard over the people of Israel as they minister at the tabernacle. ⁹ And ^(G)you shall give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they are ^(H)wholly given to him from among the people of Israel. ¹⁰ And you shall appoint Aaron and his sons, and ^(I)they shall guard their priesthood. But if ^(J)any outsider comes near, he shall be put to death.”

¹¹ And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ¹² “Behold, ^(K)I have taken the Levites from among the people of Israel instead of every firstborn who opens the womb among the people of Israel. The Levites shall be mine, ¹³ for ^(L)all the firstborn are mine. ^(M)On the day that I struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated for my own all the firstborn in Israel, both of man and of beast. They shall be mine: I am the Lord.”

^38 (A)The sons of Seir: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. ³⁹ The sons of Lotan: Hori and Hemam;^[a] and Lotan's sister was Timna. ⁴⁰ The sons of Shobal: Alvan,^[b] Manahath, Ebal, Shepho,^[c] and Onam. The sons of Zibeon: Aiah and Anah. ⁴¹ The son^[d] of Anah: Dishon. The sons of Dishon: Hemdan,^[e] Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran. ⁴² The sons of Ezer: Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.^[f] The sons of Dishan: Uz and Aran.

^43 (B)These are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the people of Israel: Bela the son of Beor, the name of his city being Dinhabah. ⁴⁴ Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of ^(C)Bozrah reigned in his place. ⁴⁵ Jobab died, and Husham of the land of the ^(D)Temanites reigned in his place. ⁴⁶ Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who defeated Midian in the country of Moab, reigned in his place, the name of his city being Avith. ⁴⁷ Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his place. ⁴⁸ Samlah died, and Shaul of Rehoboth on the Euphrates^[g] reigned in his place. ⁴⁹ Shaul died, and Baal-hanan, the son of Achbor, reigned in his place. ⁵⁰ Baal-hanan died, and Hadad reigned in his place, the name of his city being Pai; and his wife's name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab. ⁵¹ And Hadad died.

The chiefs of Edom were: chiefs Timna, Alvah, Jetheth, ⁵² Oholibamah, Elah, Pinon, ⁵³ Kenaz, Teman, Mibzar, ⁵⁴ Magdiel, and Iram; these are the chiefs of Edom.

^10 (E)“Persia and ^(F)Lud and ^(G)Put were in your army as your men of war. ^(H)They hung the shield and helmet in you; they gave you splendor. ¹¹ Men of ^(I)Arvad and Helech were on your walls all around, and men of Gamad were in your towers. They hung their shields on your walls all around; they made ^(J)perfect your beauty.

^12 (K)“Tarshish did ^(L)business with you because of your great wealth of every kind; silver, iron, tin, and lead they exchanged for your ^(M)wares. ^13 (N)Javan, ^(O)Tubal, and ^(P)Meshech traded with you; they exchanged human beings and vessels of bronze for your merchandise. ¹⁴ From ^(Q)Beth-togarmah they exchanged horses, war horses, and mules ^(R)for your wares. ¹⁵ The men of ^(S)Dedan^[a] traded with you. Many coastlands were your own special markets; they brought you in payment ivory tusks and ebony. ¹⁶ Syria ^(T)did business with you because of your abundant goods; they exchanged for your wares ^(U)emeralds, ^(V)purple, ^(W)embroidered work, ^(X)fine linen, coral, and ^(Y)ruby. ¹⁷ Judah and the land of Israel traded with you; they exchanged for your merchandise ^(Z)wheat of ^(AA)Minnith, meal,^[b] honey, oil, and ^(AB)balm. ^18 (AC)Damascus did business with you for your abundant goods, because of your great wealth of every kind; wine of Helbon and ^(AD)wool of Sahar ¹⁹ and casks of wine^[c] from Uzal they exchanged for your wares; wrought iron, ^(AE)cassia, and ^(AF)calamus were bartered for your merchandise.

The Narrow Door

^22 (A)He went on his way through towns and villages, teaching and ^(B)journeying toward Jerusalem. ²³ And someone said to him, “Lord, ^(C)will those who are saved be few?” And he said to them, ^24 (D)“Strive ^(E)to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. ^25 (F)When once the master of the house has risen and shut the door, and you begin to stand outside and to knock at the door, saying, ^(G)‘Lord, open to us,’ then he will answer you, ^(H)‘I do not know where you come from.’ ²⁶ Then you will begin to say, ^(I)‘We ate and drank in your presence, and you taught in our streets.’ ²⁷ But he will say, ‘I tell you, ^(J)I do not know where you come from. ^(K)Depart from me, all you workers of evil!’ ^28 (L)In that place there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth, when you see ^(M)Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and all the prophets in the kingdom of God but ^(N)you yourselves cast out. ²⁹ And ^(O)people will come from east and west, and from north and south, and ^(P)recline at table in the kingdom of God. ³⁰ And behold, ^(Q)some are last who will be first, and some are first who will be last.”

Lament over Jerusalem

³¹ At that very hour some Pharisees came and said to him, “Get away from ^(R)here, for ^(S)Herod wants to kill you.” ³² And he said to them, “Go and tell that fox, ‘Behold, I cast out demons and perform cures today and tomorrow, and the third day ^(T)I finish my course. ³³ Nevertheless, ^(U)I ^(V)must go on my way today and tomorrow and the day following, for it cannot be that ^(W)a prophet should perish away from Jerusalem.’ ^34 (X)O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that ^(Y)kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! ^(Z)How often would I have ^(AA)gathered ^(AB)your children together ^(AC)as a hen gathers her brood ^(AD)under her wings, and ^(AE)you were not willing! ³⁵ Behold, ^(AF)your house is forsaken. And I tell you, you will not see me until you say, ^(AG)‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’”

Paul's Concern for the Galatians

⁸ Formerly, when you ^(A)did not know God, you ^(B)were enslaved to those that by nature ^(C)are not gods. ⁹ But now that you have come to know God, or rather ^(D)to be known by God, ^(E)how can you turn back again to ^(F)the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more? ^10 (G)You observe days and months and seasons and years! ¹¹ I am afraid ^(H)I may have labored over you in vain.

¹² Brothers,^{[a] (I)}I entreat you, become as I am, for I also have become as you are. ^(J)You did me no wrong. ¹³ You know it was ^(K)because of a bodily ailment that I preached the gospel to you ^(L)at first, ¹⁴ and though my condition was a trial to you, you did not scorn or despise me, but received me ^(M)as an angel of God, ^(N)as Christ Jesus. ¹⁵ What then has become of your blessedness? For I testify to you that, if possible, you would have gouged out your eyes and given them to me. ¹⁶ Have I then become your enemy by ^(O)telling you the truth?^{[b] 17} They make much of you, but for no good purpose. They want to shut you out, that you may make much of them. ¹⁸ It is always good to be made much of for a good purpose, and ^(P)not only when I am present with you, ^19 (Q)my little children, ^(R)for whom I am again in the anguish of childbirth until Christ ^(S)is formed in you! ²⁰ I wish I could be present with you now and change my tone, for I am perplexed about you.
